Study Guide for Membrane Separations

R.P.I. students in Biochemical Engineering should expect the following materials to be covered on the next quiz:
  • The concentration polarization demo is important.
  • fouling. You should know why you sometimes use hydrophillic membranes and sometimes hydrophobic membranes,
  • membrane configurations. You should know when to use hollow fibers and when to use spiral modules.
  • making and testing membranes.
  • electrodialysis. Be prepared to explain why ions can either pass or be rejected.
  • Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium. No calculations, just general concepts.
