Research plays an integral role in the pursuit of Rensselaer’s vision for the future.

The scientific and technical themes that are changing the world — biotechnology, energy security, information technology, and nanotechnology — are at the center of Rensselaer’s research focus:

Rensselaer’s research programs reach across the campus and beyond, linking together departments, schools, interdisciplinary centers, and stimulating the integration of inquiry, new knowledge, and education.

The discovery of new scientific concepts and technologies, especially in emerging interdisciplinary fields, is the lifeblood of RPI’s culture and a core goal for faculty, staff, and students.

Rensselaer has developed relationships with hundreds of our academic colleagues, national funding institutions, diverse federal laboratories, and more than 200 industrial affiliates all over the country on specialized projects.

Regional ties to excellent institutions such as Albany Medical Center, the Wadsworth Center of the New York State Department of Health, and the Ordway Research Institute extend our local impact.

The 1,250-acre Technology Park, opened in 1983, is home to more than 50 technologically oriented companies and 2,300 employees, representing a wide diversity of technologies including physics, electronics, biotechnology, and software.

Park tenants collaborate with faculty and students on research projects, making the site a “living laboratory.” They receive immediate entreé to the university and retain students for internships, co-ops, and employment.
